Samuel Young was murdered on August 21, 1978. Early that morning, Samuel's mother Bernadette woke up and discovered he was missing. In a panic, she called the police and told them that she suspected Samuel's father had taken him. A few hours later at approximately 12:30pm, police found Samuel's father, William Oliver Young, barefoot and wandering around Penn Forest inside Wharton State Park. He began rambling to the police about locking his baby in the trunk of his car. The car, a 1974 Fiat, was found not long after in a remote area of the park. When police pried it open, they found Samuel's body. Samuel had been stabbed multiple times in the chest. Young was arrested immediately and held on an open count of homicide. Detective John Slota stated that the murder weapon had not been identified, but that police confiscated tools, including several screwdrivers, from the car's trunk. It was revealed that Young had been under the care of a psychiatrist. On the day he murdered Samuel, he was supposed to have turned himself into the psychiatric unit of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. Two days after the murder, Judge Paul Kramer ordered Young committed to an institution for the criminally insane to undergo an evaluation. During most of the hearing, Young sat with his eyes closed and a grin on his face. As a result of the psychiatric evaluation, Young was found not guilty by reason of insanity. On August 6, 1982, Young was pronounced dead less than an hour after flipping his car in a two-car collision on Route 40.
