Nearly 7 years ago, my life completely turned upside down. I had to leave the town I spent my entire life in, and move schools. I moved to 4 different homes in the first year because I was told, no foster home ever wants a teenager, since they come with issues. I was told I shouldn’t go to college, until my high school counselor shoved a SAT fee waiver in my hand, sat me down and told me “Arine you are too smart and you have too much potential to just give up on your life and not go to college.” For all the people in my life that took a chance on me, supported me through my wrongs and rights, and helped to shape me into the person I am today, I am extremely grateful. From my foster family who showed a broken teenage Arine unconditional love, to my amazing coaches and friends who showed me unconditional support. Thank you and I’m glad I didn’t let you down :) it was a long and difficult journey but new medication and a different diagnosis later… I’m a lot better now, extremely grateful, just a little less broken now, and soon to be a degree hotter with a degree in Computer Science and Linguistics! — DISCLAIMER: I will graduate soon! I thought people would think I’m deficient or not smart, but I’ve come to realize if they do, I don’t care anymore because i refuse to let anyone make me feel ashamed of something that is a sign of my resilience and strength — I don’t care if you think it’s my only personality trait, there are not many foster kids in the world, there is NO ONE in this world with a similar backstory to me, and I’m so incredibly proud of myself for everything I’ve achieved and accomplished despite the setbacks I faced and if my story can inspire others in a similar situation then that’s all I could ever hope for — So if me being a foster kid annoys you, you can just scroll away, but there is no shame in being in the system because it doesn’t define me.
