Just one day after he surprised many by appearing outside the Vatican on Easter Sunday, Pope Francis died on Monday at the age of 88. He had been recovering from a near-fatal bout of double pneumonia. The pope appeared on a balcony overlooking St. Peter's Square to deliver a blessing and wave at those who gathered. ''Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter," he said in Italian. "Viva il Papa," the crowd responded – "Long live the Pope."

A death row inmate in South Carolina, who was convicted of a double murder, is scheduled to be executed Friday night by firing squad – a method that has not been used in the United States in almost 15 years, and never in the state of South Carolina. As CBS News' Meg Oliver reports, the state maintains this is not cruel and unusual punishment because they allow the death row inmate to choose between lethal injection, firing squad and the electric chair. 67-year-old Brad Sigmon chose a firing squad. #southcarolina #crime

A South Carolina man was executed by firing squad Friday — the first execution of its kind in the U.S. since 2010 and just the fourth firing squad execution since the death penalty resumed in this country 49 years ago. Brad Sigmon, 67, walked into the death chamber at 6:05 p.m. Friday, where he was strapped into a chair and had a target placed over his heart, South Carolina authorities said Friday evening. Sigmon had a hood placed over his head, and three Corrections Department volunteers armed with rifles fired bullets designed to shatter on impact. The Supreme Court on Friday denied Sigmon's last-ditch effort to delay execution. Sigmon, who admitted to killing his ex-girlfriend's parents with a baseball bat and kidnapped her after she refused to come back to him, said he chose to die by bullets because he considered the other choices offered by the state to be worse. #news #SouthCarolina #crime
