Cheesecake does not, however, love getting out of bed in the morning. Capybaras are typically crepuscular. This means that they prefer grazing and doing other capybara things early in the morning and later in the evening. Cheesecake didn’t get the memo about that “early in the morning” part 😂 Joking aside, capybaras change their activity level based on when their predators are most active. Capybaras are just chill and friendly, and they CAN do serious damage to each other while establishing dominance and territory. Thankfully, Cheesecake wasn’t seriously hurt, just scraped up a bit. But it is still a good lesson. Animal behavior is complicated. Just because you see a cute video online doesn’t mean that’s what that animal’s usual behavior amounts to. We show you guys how energetic and fast capybaras can be, and we also try to show you when their interactions aren’t quite so friendly. That’s all part of animal care and socialization. For the time being, we’ll let Cheesecake continue to stay inside, and will work on putting a little door between the stalls so they can see and smell each other but Cheesecake will be protected from Pumpkin taking over her space. We recently expanded our capy complex to give Cheesecake her own “room” Pumpkin is very territorial of her bed, so part of the process of getting Cheesecake acclimated to staying outside overnight includes making sure she has her own space to be comfy in without getting in Pumpkin’s hair too much.
