The qipao is a symbol of radical women's liberation: Born during the fall of the Qing dynasty and reshaped in the early Republic of China, the cheongsam/qipao became a symbol of the "New Woman". Modern, educated, politically aware and politically active. Then came the "New Life Movement" in 1934, a state campaign to enforce Confucian values and ‘clean up’ the nation. It pushed conservatism, discipline, order, and morality, especially for women. Ironically, women began to wear these for radical reasons like the May Fourth Movement (anti imperialist). At a time when women were fighting to end foot binding, demanding education, working, voting, organizing... the qipao was transformed from a symbol of confucian conservatism to a dress of power, strength, and the refusal to back down from a fight. They never wore it to follow the rules, they wore it to break them. #qipao #cheongsam #1930s #1940s #vintagefashion #history
